When in the World - data credits, licences and how to rebuild 1. CShapes 2.0 (borders and capitals, 1886 to today) Schvitz, G., Girardin, L., Rüegger, S., Weidmann, N. B., Cederman, L.-E., & Gleditsch, K. S. (2022). "Mapping the International System, 1886-2019: The CShapes 2.0 Dataset." Journal of Conflict Resolution 66(1), 144-161. https://icr.ethz.ch/data/cshapes/ LICENCE: Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 4.0, as stated by ETH Zurich on the page above. BY = credit them. NC = no commercial use. SA = share changed data under the same licence. (The copy inside the cshapes R package is labelled GPL >= 2 on CRAN; the dataset owner's terms are the ones to follow.) Used in: globes-cshapes.js (simplified, renamed, capitals corrected; shared under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0). BEFORE ANY ADS, PAID FEATURES OR SPONSORSHIP: get written permission from the CShapes authors at ETH Zurich, or replace this data. 2. Historical Basemaps (borders for 1800, 1815, 1880 and the grey land backdrop) Andre Ourednik and contributors, https://github.com/aourednik/historical-basemaps LICENCE: GNU GPL v3. Commercial use is allowed, but anyone you give the data to may share it freely, and you must offer the source (this folder does that). Used in: globes-historical-basemaps.js and maps.js. The two sources are kept in separate files on purpose, because their licences are different. Site layout: every file sits in the main folder next to index.html, except the scoreboard in functions/api/. How to rebuild (run from the site folder): 1. python source/build_maps.py -> maps.js 2. python source/build_globes.py -> globes-cshapes.js and globes-historical-basemaps.js The CShapes file ships with the cshapes R package: https://github.com/cran/cshapes (inst/extdata). build_capitals.py holds the capital-city corrections and the capitals for 1800, 1815 and 1880; build_globes.py imports it. Name tables (country names and city names by year) are at the top of build_globes.py. The scoreboard (daily averages) is functions/api/[[path]].js, which runs on Cloudflare Pages Functions with a D1 database connected under the variable name DB. It creates its own tables on first use. Game settings (launch date for puzzle #1, whether Unlimited play is open) are in the CONFIG block near the top of the script in index.html. Colonies vs independent countries (the stripes): 1886 on: the "status" and "owner" fields in CShapes 2.0. 1800, 1815, 1880: HB_TERRITORIES in build_globes.py, checked against Gleditsch & Ward (1999), International Interactions 25(4):393-413, and the Correlates of War State System Membership list (v2016), as packaged in the "states" R package (github.com/andybega/states).
